You know you’ve been wondering… Is your fitness teacher a sadist?
Chances are, yes.
Now, I never tortured animals or really anyone (other than my sister, of course) as a child, and as an adult, I probably tortured a boyfriend or 10, but not coworkers or bosses.
There was that year in high school where I didn’t speak to my parents because they ruined my life because they wouldn’t pay for me to go to Pepperdine. But generally, I’m a nice person. If you’re a student of mine, though, you might disagree.
As a Pilates teacher, I do get a little pleasure inflicting pain. No, I don’t want you to hurt yourself, and I take a lot of pride in the fact that at Fuse Pilates, our teachers are highly trained and know how to make you stronger without injuring you. But I do want to break you – just a little bit – to show you how strong you really are.
If no one ever pushes you to do more than you think you can (one more pushup, holding a pose for 8 counts longer than seems reasonable), you won’t know how strong you actually are.
I’ve been told that I smirk when I’m about to deliver an exercise that’s particularly difficult. Deep inside, I feel a little jolt of glee. Let’s see if they can do this. If you curse under your breath during class, I take it as a compliment. Because I want you to work hard and show yourself you are capable of more than you think.
And after a couple of classes, that impossible thing will be less so. So, I’ll try to come up with something else. Because even at my advancing age, I still like it when I find out I can do that thing I once couldn’t.
